Partnership

After working as architects in Indonesia in 1985, Don Vallaster and Michael Corl formed and quickly established their partnership in Portland, Oregon. Since then, Vallaster and Corl have held true to the vision that a smaller, open, and collaborative architectural practice would produce outstanding projects.

Mission

Don Vallaster and Michael Corl have consistently produced award-winning projects. Guiding the firm’s work is the belief that buildings are best when derived from their site and context, are materially of their time, embrace both the vitality and rigor of the city, or the repose of the landscape. Vallaster and Corl consistently innovate within the competing dynamics of design, economy, and politics to achieve works of architecture.

Considered integral to good design, Vallaster Corl Architects historically have practiced principles of environmental responsibility. Sustainable site planning strategies, adaptive re-use, high performance building systems, and environmentally responsible materials, products, and appliances are a few of the means we employ to meet our client’s sustainability goals.

Client Liaison Process

Our client's success and goodwill top out of our priorities at Vallaster Corl Architects. Their concerns, budget, and goals are held foremost throughout our efforts in the design and construction phases.

Collaboration is key to the success of Vallaster and Corl's design process. The open studio office environment nurtures direct communication among the partners, our clients and their teams. It is a regular practice at VCA to invite the entire staff to share insights, previous experiences, and inspiration on the best way to address and solve our client's problems.

Clients receive the close attention of Don Vallaster and Michael Corl throughout each phase of their project. Their approach is one of 'personal touch' involvement, where each is in charge of smaller projects independently, or works jointly on larger projects. In either scenario, the client is assured of the partner's continual focus and good working knowledge of their project.

From early concept discussions, through the project's construction, design decisions are made jointly by the partner in charge and project architect in close consultation and collaboration with the client. As deemed appropriate, the partner in charge and project architect represent and advocate on behalf of the client before design review committees, neighborhood associations, and building permit jurisdictions.

The partner's 'hands on' management gives the firm a competitive advantage in project delivery. Our project delivery process is an efficient one, with a track record of completing unique solutions on time and within budget, using materials and technology specifically and appropriately tailored to our client's needs.
